Something about Casablanca
The population of Greater Casablanca is estimated at more than 4.2 million (2014). 98% of them live in urban areas. 25% is under 15 and 8.7% is over 60 years. The population of the city is about 12% of the total population of Morocco. Greater Casablanca is also the largest urban area in the Maghreb. The population consists of three major ethnic groups. The most important group is that of the 'Roubie, descendants of Arab nomadic tribes, who were established in this area in the 13th century. The second important group are the Swassa, Berbers from the area of Agadir. A third, less large, group are the Fessions. The last two groups traditionally belong to the economically higher class of Casablanca, and thus of all of Morocco.
On the site of the current Casablanca was the Berber settlement Anfa. [2] The city would keep this name until the 16th century, after which it became known under its current name. The name Anfa remains in the name for the old, original part of Casablanca. It is the most prosperous, westernized part of the city. In addition, the larger Casablanca region is called Casa-Anfa.
In response to the arrival of the Islamic armies, an independent, Berber kingdom arose around the city in the 7th century, which opposed Arab influences. This small kingdom of the Barghawata survived until it was conquered by the Almoravids in the 11th century. In the 14th century Anfa was developed by the Merinides into an important port city. From the 15th century it became independent again and the city became a hotbed of pirates. For this reason the Portuguese destroyed the city in 1468. In 1515, the Portuguese rebuilt the city under the name "Casa Branca". The Portuguese remained until 1755 when they left the city after an earthquake. It was rebuilt by Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah as Dar el-Beida. The Spaniards were given the right to establish a commercial center and gave it its current name.
Yet it was only after the French colonization from 1912 that Casablanca outdid other Moroccan cities like Fez and Marrakech: Rabat became capital, and the axis Rabat-Casablanca was strongly developed by the French. Casablanca became the most important trading city in the country and the most important place for European establishment.
In January 1943, the Casablanca Conference was held in Casablanca, an important conference in which Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill agreed that only the complete surrender of Nazi Germany would be accepted as the end of the Second World War.
On 16 May 2003, terrorist attacks took place in Casablanca, killing 45 people.
On 26 April 2008, 55 people died due to a fire in a mattress factory. The employees often could not escape the fire. The factory was secured against theft from the inside.
The Greater-Casablanca region is seen as the locomotive of the development of the Moroccan economy. It is responsible for 39% of national production and 60% of industrial workers. The region consumes 35% of national electricity production. With 86 billion MAD, the region provides 54% of industrial production. 41% of the country's industrial exports come from the Greater-Casablanca region. 30% of the Moroccan banking sector is located in Casablanca. For decades Casablanca has developed into a larger world city. This is partly due to the construction of many office buildings and a larger port.
The activities of the Casablanca and Mohammedia ports account for 55% of Moroccan international trade. 48% of passenger traffic in Morocco goes via Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport. [3]

Something about Agadir
Agadir is a fairly "new" city with over 600,000 inhabitants and is located about 200 km south of Essaouire by the sea. You will not find old monuments because the city was almost completely destroyed during a very large earthquake in 1960.
At the moment Agadir is important as a fishing port and after Marrakesh it is the most important tourist attraction. Together with Marrakesh, the city attracts more than 60% of all tourists who visit Morocco.
An important attraction of the city is the Marina with numerous restaurants and shops. From the Marina you can walk to the beach or along the boulevard with its numerous hotels, clubs and souvenir shops. Even in the evening and at night there is a lot to do in Agadir.
In the area of Agadir you will find many Argan trees. These trees only grow in south-west Morocco. The trees, when they are thirty years old, produce fruit that contains hard seeds that again contain seeds from which the argan oil is obtained. This oil is used for cosmetic and culunary purposes.

Something about Essaouira
Essaouira is an old city by the sea with a population of around 70,000 and therefore much smaller than Agadir; it is located about 200 km north of Agadir also at 3 hours from Marrakech. The name Essaouira is a diminutive and means wall or wall. Until the 60s it had the Portuguese name Mogador; you will still find a lot of this name in the city.
Essaouira, like Agadir, is a fishing port where mainly sardine is caught. It is, just like Agadir and Marrakesh, an important tourist attraction.
Another important attraction of the city is the Medina with its numerous restaurants and shops. From the Medina you can walk to the beach or along the boulevard with numerous hotels and restaurants. Even in the evening and at night it is pleasantly busy in Essaouira.
On the road to Agadir you will find many Argan trees. These trees only grow in south-west Morocco. The trees, when they are thirty years old, produce fruit that contains hard seeds that again contain seeds from which the argan oil is obtained. This oil is used for cosmetic and culunary purposes.

Something about Rabat
Rabat is the capital and the goverment city of Morocco and has over 1 million inhabitants.
Rabat lies on the Atlantic Ocean opposite the town of Salé. Because the port silted up, its significance decreases, but fortunately Rabat still has an important textile industry.
The place of the current Rabat has been inhabited for a long time. The city was known as Sala during the Roman period. In the 5th century AD. the Roman city was abandoned.
In 1912 Rabat became the capital of the French protectorate of Morocco and the seat of the resident. After Morocco became independent in 1956, Rabat remained the most important city.
Because of its rich history, Rabat is especially suitable for culture lovers and less for beach lovers.
The Mohammed V university is located in Rabat.

Something about Tanger
Tangier has, excluding suburbs, about 950,000 inhabitants.
The city lies on the Strait of Gibraltar and is very important for the transport of goods and people between Europe and Africa.
Tangier is one of the oldest cities in Morocco (only Larache is older). The city is probably in the 6th century BC. founded by Phoenicians under the name Tingis.
Tangier was given in 1661 as a dowry to the English king Charles II when he married the Portuguese infante Catharina of Braganca. The English king gave the city the rights of English cities and laid a garrison there.
The history of the city is dominated until the beginning of the 20th century by the difficult relationship between the governors and the Moroccan kings.
The United States established their first consulate in Tangier after their independence. During the American Revolution, American ships were able to visit the port of Tangier, creating a bond and making Morocco the first country recognized by the American Republic (1777).
With the independence of Morocco in 1956 the American diplomatic mission moved from the medina of Tangier to the capital Rabat.
The city increasingly came under the French sphere of influence. In 1912, Morocco lost its independence and was in fact divided between France and Spain, which occupied the north of the country and part of the Atlantic coast in the south. After France had entered into agreements with Spain and Great Britain, Morocco was officially divided into a French and a Spanish protectorate in 1923. After the French defeat at the start of the Second World War, the city was occupied by Spanish nationalist troops. The Spanish administration admitted in 1941 that a consulate of Nazi Germany was opened in Tangier. This German representation closed again in 1944, after which Spain withdrew in 1945 and the city regained its international status. Tangier could become a hotbed for espionage and smuggling - and in this way attract foreign capital - through its neutrality and free trade. The multicultural climate of Islamic, Jewish and Christian communities, along with various foreign immigrants, attracted Western writers. The Rolling Stones stayed in Tangier for a short or longer period of time. Because of his international past, Spanish is also spoken in Tangier, in addition to Arabic, Riffinian and French. In 2002, King Mohammed VI of Morocco declared that he wanted to modernize the northern region of Tangier-Tetouan and lay the economic focus of Morocco here. Since then, major public buildings have been started (including the construction of a stadium, expansion of the airport and the construction of a new port).
